Strikes today

Updated for Friday, 16 October 2026. Check in real time the train, public transport and travel strikes called today in Italy.

This page answers one question: is there a strike in Italy today? The list below is built automatically from the Italian Ministry of Transport strike dashboard and shows the stoppages called for the current day, with sector, territorial scope, hours and the unions that called them.

An empty list today does not mean a clear week. Strikes must be called at least ten days in advance, so dates that are already known appear in the upcoming strikes section.

How to read a strike called for today

Strikes differ in ways that matter a great deal to a traveller. A national strike covers the whole country; a regional or provincial one hits a single area and may leave the network a few kilometres away untouched. A twenty-four-hour stoppage behaves quite differently from a four-hour one concentrated in mid-morning.

The striking category matters too. When train drivers stop, the effect on services is immediate; when the walkout involves ticket-office or cleaning staff, trains run and queues lengthen instead. We list the category precisely because it is what lets you judge the real disruption.

  • —Scope: national, regional or company-level — check that it covers your route.
  • —Hours: full day, or a limited window.
  • —Category: driving staff, ground staff, administrative or contracted workers.
  • —Operator: a single company, or the whole sector.

Guaranteed service bands, explained

Service does not drop to zero on a strike day: the law requires minimum provision, which on local public transport normally means the weekday bands 06:00-09:00 and 18:00-21:00, designed to protect people travelling to work. In air transport the typically protected bands are 07:00-10:00 and 18:00-21:00, while rail operators publish a named list of guaranteed trains.

A band protects the service, not its punctuality: in the minutes either side of the stoppage vehicles are returning to depot or setting out again, so departures thin out before the formal hour. Planning your journey for the middle of a band rather than its edge is the single most effective precaution.

The rules: law 146/1990 and advance notice

In essential public services, strikes are not unconstrained: Italian law 146/1990 requires minimum advance notice (normally ten days), a stated duration, and guaranteed minimum service. That is why transport strikes in Italy are known weeks ahead rather than announced overnight.

Oversight sits with the Commissione di Garanzia, the authority supervising strike law, which can flag an irregular call and invite the unions to postpone it. The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport can also issue a precettazione order, shortening or deferring a strike where a constitutionally protected right is at risk — around elections, or during the summer travel peak, for instance.

A second constraint is "objective rarefaction": two strikes hitting the same group of users must be spaced apart in time. In practice that means an announced date can move, and a strike called off at the last minute is a normal outcome of the procedure rather than an anomaly.

Your rights when the journey falls through

A strike is known in advance, so a carrier cannot treat the cancelled service as an ordinary unforeseen event: if the service you paid for is not delivered, you are entitled to a refund or to rebooking without penalty. The right channel is always the operator you bought from.

On long-distance rail, being rebooked onto a guaranteed train is usually the fastest route; on local public transport, where tickets are time-based, keep the ticket unvalidated. In air travel it matters who strikes: when the airline’s own staff walk out, the EU Court of Justice (case C-28/20, 2021) held that this is not an extraordinary circumstance, so on top of a refund or rerouting you may be owed the cash compensation of regulation 261/2004; when outside staff strike — air traffic control, airport workers — compensation is normally not due, but refund and care still are.

In every case, keep the evidence: ticket, booking, and the cancellation notice you received. That is what turns an otherwise drawn-out complaint into a simple one.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a strike in Italy today?

The top of this page lists the stoppages called for today, generated from the official Ministry of Transport strike dashboard and refreshed several times a day. If the list is empty, no transport strikes are currently called for today.

What time does a strike start and end?

Hours are shown for each stoppage: it may cover the full day (normally 00:00 to 24:00) or a limited window. On local public transport the weekday bands 06:00-09:00 and 18:00-21:00 remain guaranteed.

Why can an announced strike be called off?

Because calling a strike is a formal act that can be deferred or withdrawn: the supervising authority may find irregularities, the Minister may issue a precettazione order, or negotiations may conclude before the date. That is why this page is rebuilt from official data.

How do I find out in advance?

Strikes are known at least ten days ahead. With the C’è Sciopero app you get a push notification when a stoppage is called that affects the services and routes you have chosen to follow.
